How this is calculated

We convert each product's quantity into a common base unit (grams for weight, millilitres for volume) so different pack sizes and units can be compared fairly, then scale to a friendlier display unit (per 100g or per litre).

Formula

Unit cost = price ÷ quantity (converted to a common base unit)Display cost = unit cost × 100 (per 100g) or × 1000 (per litre)

Worked example

500g for $4 works out to $0.80 per 100g. A 1kg pack for $6 works out to $0.60 per 100g — the better per-unit value, even though it costs more upfront.
