Rent Affordability Calculator
Enter your income and housing costs to see what percentage of your income goes toward housing — compared against a target percentage you choose. This tool doesn't tell you what you can afford; it shows you the numbers so you can decide for yourself.
Your entered housing cost as a percentage of your entered income — +4.0 percentage points vs. your 30% target.
This shows your entered housing cost as a percentage of your entered income, compared to a target you chose. It doesn’t tell you what you can afford — that depends on your full financial picture.
How this is calculated
We add up your entered housing costs (rent, utilities, internet, parking and anything else) and divide that by your entered monthly income to get a percentage.
You choose your own target percentage — there's no universal threshold applied here, because appropriate housing spend varies by person and location.
Formula
Total housing cost = rent + utilities + internet + parking + otherHousing cost percentage = total housing cost ÷ monthly income × 100Difference from target = housing cost percentage − your chosen target percentageWorked example
On $5,000/month income with $1,600 rent and $100 utilities, housing costs represent 34% of income. Against a self-selected 30% target, that's 4 percentage points above target.
